Can hardwood floors be installed over concrete?

Hardwood floors can be installed over any subfloor, including concrete. Wood flooring is always a good investment. It lasts many decades, and if you sell your home, you can count on the classic floor covering to entice an eager homebuyer. Most importantly, you'll enjoy the beauty that makes this flooring a perennial favorite. SNC Flooring offers a large selection of trendy hardwood flooring styles. Our showroom is located in Mountain Home, Arkansas.

Solid hardwood flooring must be nailed to a wood subfloor. But engineered wood needs no attachment to the surface beneath it. Therefore, it's ideal for installation over concrete. Since these manufactured planks are designed to connect, the floor floats above the subfloor. While there is a layer of hardwood on the surface, a base made of plywood is situated below. Because this base is composed of many layers of plywood positioned in different directions, engineered wood can tolerate moisture.

Multiple-layer manufactured wood includes a tough wear layer. But if this surface layer becomes worn in the future, the floor can be refinished. For maximum durability, underlayment, or padding, is placed on top of the concrete subfloor. Commonly, 3-in-1 underlayment, which includes a vapor barrier, is used. Thus, padding protects the flooring from moisture, and it muffles noise, too. Padding also provides support as the planks expand or contract during temperature and humidity changes.
